While I always have a knitting project on the needles, it seems that my other crafting has taken a back burner lately. There have been a few project that I've had in the back of my mind to make, but just haven't had the time or, more often than not, the energy to make. This weekend, this all changed. I woke up yesterday feeling inspired and took a trip to my local Michael's store after waiting in line for an hour at the re-inspection station in Secaucus (why the re-inspection line was longer than the inspection line, I will never understand). So I picked up my necessary supplies, spent some time shopping and reading at Barnes & Noble, and set off for home renewed, inspired, and sporting a caffeine buzz.
The first project came to me a while ago when I was taking down all of my old calendars for new ones. If you're like me, this is a sad process not because you aren't looking forward to the new year, but because you will now have to get rid of those beautiful pictures you've been staring at month after month. So I thought, why not mat and frame my favorites? I know this isn't an original idea by any means, but as my apartment has very bare walls, it was something that needed to be done. And here it is, after much measuring and almost cutting my finger off with an x-acto knife, my beautiful framed prints. This was made from a small kitchen calendar entitled Bon Apetit which is made up of vintage posters.
Materials:
16"x20" picture frame, white grid-lined poster board, ruler, x-acto knife, invisible tape
Next up is something that I've needed in my car a long time. I once read in a magazine articles that women, particularly married women, have the messiest cars. While I am not married yet, I do live out of my car. On any given day you can find shoes, knitting projects, discarded jackets and sweaters, and worst of all a CD slot and cup holder full of discarded receipts, napkins, tissues, antibacterial wipes (i wipe down my car often), along with other miscellaneous trash.
I discovered One-Yard Wonders a while ago while browsing the crafts section at B&N and picked it up. This book is filled with tons of super cute projects to make with all of that left-over fabric that I always seem to have. I find that this book is very well written and easy to follow. While I'm not a beginner to sewing, I'm not an expert either so clear and direct directions are always needed. This book provides all of that, along with very useful notes and hints. I really appreciate the fact that the authors also make a note at the beginning on their patterns for cutting. So here is the long needed solution to my trash problem.
Pattern: Not-Ugly Car Trash Bag
Fabric: Amy Butler Lotus Morning Glory Linen, Random Blue Fabric Remnants
The second project that I made from this lovely book was made on a whim after enjoying the high from my Trash Bag success. It is something that I did need as my sewing machine always seems to collect a little dust between projects. It is a simple Sewing-Machine Cover and it speaks for itself.
Pattern: Sewing-Machine Cover
Fabric: Don't know exactly. Picked up tons of this stuff when the Rag Shop was going out of business.
I hope my crafty weekend projects have brought a little inspiration to your world. I know they have definitely filled my little world with some much needed brightness.
